Steve, who works for clothing retailer 'High and Mighty', ran the Bristol Marathon to raise money for our Dalit Education Centres.
Education is a key factor in preventing the trafficking and slavery of India's Dalits. Money raised by Steve has gone to one of our schools in the Delhi slums.

Abi warms up for Marathon with Lichfield Half-Marathon +
Abi Langham completed the Lichfield Half Marathon in just over 2 hours raising more than £100 for the work of DFN UK. Abi heard about the Dalits on a Radio 4 programme, and was so moved that she wanted to do something to help make a difference. Abi can still be sponsored on her Just Giving page. But Lichfield was just a warm-up. Abi is determined to push herself to the limit and is preparing for the Shrewsbury Marathon! Go Abi, go!

Charity gig in aid of DFN UK packed out +
Around 150 squeezed into Burton Manor Sports Club for a charity gig on the Easter weekend. Up and coming alternative folk band Clutching At Straws (pictured) headlined, with support from A Story To Tell and the Crooked Bawbees. The brainchild of Bob Mahal, the gig raised over £500 for the work of Dalit Freedom Network UK, and will help free Dalit women and girls from ritual sex slavery, and yet more people now know about the issue of Dalit trafficking and slavery.

Murder At The Manor event raises awareness and funds +
Fifty guests Lord Litty and Lady Kitty at historic Littywood Manor in Staffordshire were faced with a puzzle as they attempted to solve the mystery of a murder while enjoying a 3-course dinner. As well as trying to identify the criminal, guests also heard about the heinous crimes against Dalits in India and the work of DFN UK in bringing an end to human trafficking and slavery. The evening also over £500 towards DFN's work.

Busy Mums free Dalit women through online auction +
'Busy Mums' based in Staffordshire marked International Women's Day by holding an online auction to raise funds for our Jogini Economic Empowerment Programme. Items for sale included cup cakes, restaurant meals, coaching and consultancy. Money raised will be used to free Dalit women from ritual sex slavery by providing them with livelihoods through vocational training (tailoring) or microloans (buffalo, goats, chilli powder press) to set up in business.

Indian Cuisine Evening helps free two Dalit women from ritual slavery +
An Indian Cuisine Evening organised by our new Dalit Freedom Action Group in Knowle was packed out. Diners heard from DFN UK's national director about the situation faced by Dalit women in India. Proceeds from the evening will prime a loan for a chilli powder press which will provide a livelihood and dignity for two Dalit women, helping to set them free from ritual sex slavery.

Thanet moves swiftly to set up action group +
Following a successful curry evening with a speaker from DFN UK, a new Dalit Freedom Action Group has been set up in the Thanet area of Kent. Those involved have been interested in Dalit issues for some years. They are now looking at how they can raise awareness on the streets of their towns.

Margate Curry Evening highlights Dalit trafficking +
DFN supporters in Thanet, Kent organised a curry evening to raise awareness and funds. A full cafe heard about the Jogini issue and the work of DFN UK. Goods made by Dalit women through the Lydia Project (distributed through Life's Treasures) were also on sale - purchases help to provide the women with a livelihood. Organisers, who had attended the recent champions.net event, hope to develop a Dalit Freedom Action Group in the area and are already planning their next activity.

Snow and ice no joke, but comedy fundraiser goes ahead +
Treacherous snow and ice did not deter comedians Barbara Nice (pictured) and Dominic Woodward, nor their intrepid audience, to raise £300 for DFN's Jogini Economic Empowerment Programme. Stafford's Dalit Freedom Action Group had to make the call of whether to cancel or go ahead. Although audience numbers were affected by the conditions, those who did make the effort said it was one of the best charity comedy evenings organised by the group.

Action Group setting up in Knowle +
Following a presentation by DFN staff, a new Dalit Freedom Action Group is in the process of being set up in Knowle in the West Midlands. The group are already planning their first activity - a curry evening to raise awareness and funds. The group coordinator, Di, heard about the issue of ritual sex slavery among Dalit girls and was so moved that she wanted to do something about it.

People For Sale highlights issue +
Two of our Dalit Freedom Action Groups used Anti-Slavery Day to highlight the issue of Dalit trafficking and slavery. In Stafford a 'People for Sale' live display (pictured) stopped shoppers in their tracks. At UEL a packed film screening took place followed by lively discussion. Meanwhile DFN exhibited at film screenings in Bath and Loughborough.

UEL Action Group hit Freshers Fair +
Our Action Group at the University of East London had a stall at their Freshers Fair to raise awareness and recruit more members.
They report that several people signed up, and they are already planning for activities of Anti-Slavery Day!

Cheese, wine, and opening eyes +
Around 40 people attended a cheese and wine evening run by our Action Group in Chelmsford on the first weekend of the London Olympics.
It was a great opportunity to raise awareness about the work of DFN and the Dalit trafficking/slavery issue while people relaxed and socialised.
