Kerala Flood Relief Appeal
Heavy monsoon conditions claimed more than 350 lives and displaced at least 1 million people in nearly two weeks of intense rains which have produced the worst flooding in Kerala in 100 years. Many people were either trapped or missing, with distress calls coming from remote villages where help has thus far been unable to reach. Even hospitals across the state were rendered useless as floodwaters have ravaged their facilities and put patients in extreme danger.
A massive rescue operation by local government authorities and Indian military personnel continues, as they also supply some relief provisions to those hardest hit. In addition to the loss of life, homes and roads have been destroyed and rail service has been severely disrupted. Damage to crops is immense and will have a long term negative impact on the economic condition of farmers across the state.
This is why we do what we do!
Our partner OMIF is already part of a massive effort to bring relief to those suffering as a result of the devastation caused by the floods.
For many the immediate need is still for food and subsistence. OMIF has designed kits which will bring food and other life saving supplies to the most vulnerable. Each kit costs only 700 rupees (less than £8).
Our immediate plan is to distribute 5,000 of these kits during September.
Please help us make this happen by giving a gift to be used for the purchase and distribution of emergency kits in Kerala.
